I can only respond publicly to an anon, so I went out of my way not to say anything in the tweet that would get it pushed by the algorithm. You clicked into it, misunderstood everything in there, and are now attacking me and thinking this is an open forum when it's not.

However, lucky you, I'll still respond to make this my public relations statement for everyone.

Second, I'm neither for nor against the skin color and lighting issue, so you're probably not going to like what I have to say. You're the obtuse one when I asked the most milquetoast question ever, simply wanting people to introspect on what kind of representation they want, and you've taken it as a personal attack. In my opinion, the reason the discourse is so heated these days is because one side thinks there's a moral obligation to have representation while the other side does not think there's a moral obligation. The reality is that there's no moral obligation for anyone or anything to support your identity. Is it nice when it happens? Hell yeah. But you cannot force this obligation onto other people. (I'll get to the whole Love and Deepspace advertising itself as being globally inclusive argument in a moment.)

I literally did not say or imply that and it's because the game embraces Chinese culture that's precisely the issue at hand. Love and Deepspace cannot divorce itself of its Chinese culture and so, again, I'm asking if you've actually considered what kind of representation you're getting with only skin color. LaDS isn't a game like Skyrim or Cyberpunk, where you can customize your character however you want and create your own story within that world. LaDS, as much as it appears to be a virtual boyfriend simulator, is a very character-driven narrative. No one arguing for or against the skin color and lighting issue is talking about the heroine's story. This was the discussion that anon and I were having (which is something people have been noticing everywhere), concerning how self-insert has become people's sole focus with media and so people are not engaging with the characters and narrative. Because after decades of reading English, Japanese, and Chinese media, I've found myself sticking to Chinese media more so than the others because something about Chinese media feels very much like home, which even to this day I'm still unpacking for myself and understanding why I feel this connection. If you haven't experienced it for yourself, then I highly recommend reading something in your native culture and then going back to media that only gives you token representation (like LaDS with its skin color options but retaining Chinese culture).

Did you think they actually believed in it? This goes back to people's beliefs in moral obligations and, in the eyes of a Chinese company, giving skin colour options is already going above and beyond what they would normally do.

Do not think you have a comeback in saying you're defending your consumer rights. Papergames has a lawsuit right now over King of Darknight precisely because the company and players cannot agree on what is their "consumer right". You want equal treatment? You haven't gotten equal treatment since the game released. Your VIP customer service and boxes were delayed, missing out on some holidays, and the global version still doesn't have the microphone speaking feature. Global servers will always be second-class citizens for any game that has a domestic server. This is the unfortunatey reality you agreed to the moment you decided to play this game on the global server. Is it fair? No. But that's how things are in this world.

I probably have to make this disclaimer, since people have comprehension issues, but I'm not defending Papergames. I think they messed up because anyone with a brain knew they were going to half-ass the representation. So, in my opinion, they shouldn't have even attempted this if they weren't going to give it any care or attention. I don't like seeing people get stuck in this abusive relationship with something they like, which is what I see happening here with everyone being so angry and yet not being able to uninstall the game. It's an egregious bad move on Papergames to give people this expectation and then do nothing.

That being said, I also think the majority of people don't understand that it's not just a simple fix for the lighting issue. Have you heard talks from black system developers? They build unique programs and models for black hair and lighting on black skin. Do you honestly think Papergames would have a team for this? Do people realize how much workload it would add to the entire production process if they had to test this new lighting program on multiple phone models and systems? People already have issues with their slow production speed, especially with the lack of main story updates, and you want them to invest and work on something that could potentially double their production time?

Do not use the comeback that Love and Deepspace is making billions in revenue, because I'm sick and tired of repeating that we have no idea about their profit margin. It's also not even guaranteed that whatever money LaDS generates is going back into LaDS, it could be funding other Papergames' projects. Once again, they don't think they have a moral obligation to give people representation so why would they spend money hiring more people for a team to do this work on the side? I guarantee this cost-benefit proposal would not convince any of their investors.

If you want to give LaDS a suggestion that's actually actionable, maybe suggest they try to avoid dark lighting in their scenes until they can dedicate more time and effort into implementing better lighting programs for dark skin.

If, after considering all this, you still want to fight for your skin color and lighting issue because it matters that much to you and it's the representation you want, then go ahead. I feel like youre being very backhanded with one of your ask pertaining to the skintone issue. Lads literally advertised itself as being global inclusive and thus has to fulfill those promises. In zaynes myth kindle it literally looks like my mc has vitiligo because they refused to adjust the textures for darker skin. Wanting equal treatment isnt being demandy. We arent asking for every asian otome to give skincolor options or have the love interest be blackified or some bizzare thing about that so why are you acting obtuse and saying representation(for a game that prides itself on being inclusive to a global audience) has gone too far?
