Both Sariel and Jesse can be considered the most "Chinese" characters in Light and Night, but I don't think there's anything you particularly need to know about Chinese culture because the writers will take you through everything. You might recognize more beats in Sariel's character arcs if you're familiar with tropes in xianxia stories but, again, it's not a requirement or anything, haha.

If I had to say something, I guess you can keep in mind that the Spirit Clan is based off of mythical creatures from the Classic of Mountains and Seas, many of them lifting their names directly out of this text. You should also be familiar with how plants and animals can "cultivate" energy and become sentient beings in Chinese folklore, because this is the basis of the Spirit Clan.

In my opinion, every love interest in Light and Night has a very complex and layered background (going through their chapter cards is like experiencing paradigm shifts again and again about their characters), but Sariel certainly has the "longest" past LOL.

To give as concise of a summary as possible with the least amount of spoilers, Sariel's character takes readers through the journey of an animal with a nature of pure innocence joining human society. Because he's very powerful, he easily becomes a war general in his father's footsteps to maintain peace between humans and the Spirit Clan. However, terrible things happen and a beast learns to be human, experiencing the joys of love, the pain of grief, and the devastation of hatred. "Was it because he was strong enough that he was unwilling to see other people sacrifice themselves? Or was it because he was unwilling to see people sacrifice themselves that he became strong?"

Intrinsically compassionate, Sariel cannot help but get involved with the world and people of the world again and again and ends up trying to create world peace. But, well, we know that's an excruciating goal and, unsurprisingly, Sariel suffers a lot and for a long time until he ends up withdrawing his sharpness, becoming passive, and accepting the "natural progress" of the world until he reunites with the heroine, the mobius strip of his life because “Space and time crisscrossed and thus fate overlapped as well. Who was it exactly who met the other first and whose heart fluttered first, causing the later sorrow and joy of separation and reunion? Many causes and effects were entangled and first, second, right, and wrong were indistinguishable from a long time ago.”

I recently started playing LN. I'm still in the early stages of the game and very interested to Sariel so far. I really like immortals or long-lived creatures and foxes. And as far as I know, Sariel's character is quite culturally related.  May I know whether Sariel's character will be closely related to Chinese culture and require a more deeper or  complex understanding? I always position myself as a reader from a third person perspective and like the complex and layered backgrounds of characters' pasts.
