It definitely feels like some Pandora's box being opened type shit happened LOL. Global spaces weren't ready for CN live service otome games, and the otome game community as a whole wasn't ready for the influx of tourists. It always amuses me whenever I'm looking at general CN otome game news, or oldies commenting on the market, and there will always be people bringing up the ground zero of when everything turned to shit for real and it's Qin Che's release HAHA.

I'm not sure I would attribute all the issues with self-inserts to Love and Deepspace, but I do think it exacerbated this phenomenon. Because around the time LaDS released, we were already hearing about people in BookTok being unable to read any books that weren't written in first-person perspective.

My new tentative hypothesis is that people have pushed "representation" too far and now people think the best games have customization and let you be the character. Just look at the skin color discourse going on in Love and Deepspace right now, where everyone is so fixated about seeing themselves represented, but they seem to ignore that the entire game is still heavily based in Chinese culture. Is it true representation when your MC is still going to be doing a ton of Chinese things and celebrating Chinese holidays? Then again, Love and Deepspace's localization has muddied this so bad that, to this day, people still believe the men aren't Chinese because they have "non-Chinese" names LOL. Localizing live service Chinese otome games is so stupid, but that's an entirely different rant.

I personally believe Love and deep space did a lot of damage to fandom and Otome game spaces as a whole. You got people thinking self inserting is a must and look at you weird if you're not doing so. Let's forget the not self inserting is very common in otoge spaces 😭 

I think so many normies, kpop fans, and the likes of them are just ruining these spaces y'know? Everybody here is like "ME ME ME" like they should be the center of a attention 😒
