It's heavily implied he was involved in the experiment that created the heroine, and then Lu Ting grievously injured him and he died (the one and only thing Lu Ting did right in his life—HAHA).

Minister Jiang preserved a fragment of his soul and revived him later, and that's who we see in Season 2 Chapter 5. However, the fragment of his soul basically just carried his last obsession or something and even Minister Jiang commented on how this man was no longer the friend he knew in the past. Anyway, he dies a second and final time after he gets into a fight with both Osborns.
