Fine! The "worst" opinion would be that the Ancient Egyptian theme is cliche, so some people aren't too interested, but they're willing to see what Light and Night is cooking.

I can't talk about cultural appropriation since I'm not of Egyptian descent LOL but, just from a glance, I don't feel as if they're treating the culture disrespectfully? The clothing is what Ancient Egyptians wore, especially with the men only in kilts that have pleats at the front, and everyone wears eye makeup. Even the hairstyle is on point, because braids are very common in Ancient Egypt.

On the topic of skin color, this has always been a huge debate about Ancient Egypt, especially whenever mainstream media decides to come out with another movie set in Ancient Egypt, so ironically we have a lot of articles discussing how Ancient Egypt was likely ethnically diverse and that there were a lot of skin colors, with the usual attitude of paleness being associated with people in higher social classes because they would not have to work outside and become tanned.

I actually really like this Reddit post on the history of culture in Ancient Egypt and how it was such a large melting pot.

Going back to the question on if Light and Night is using the culture and setting for titillation, my gut says no because I don't get that feeling from the direction and focus of the art. If you take Evan for example, he's actually more clothed and blocked in the second side than he was in Dayao (completely naked in the bath) and Bianshuo (lost his shirt for sexy poison sucking).

If we want to complain about cultural appropriation, I hope people had this same energy for Lightland because that was literally Great Britain in the 18th century. If we can accept that Light and Night navigated this period in history well, then why can we not offer them the same tolerance to explore Ancient Egypt? A friend brought up an interesting theory that the Ancient Egypt setting might have been chosen to explore the theme of gods and power, because that would fit our timeline really well! We had Bianshuo, which talked about people wanting to be gods, then we had the main story update that introduced us to literal gods, and now we might be exploring a tighter connection between people and gods, since pharaohs were divine intermediaries between the gods and their people.

I was recommended a post from ‘for you’ (mistake #1) and got in somewhat of a weird spiral where this person complained about cultural appropriation (Egyptian yet they’re all Chinese/no melanin change) and about the mls having dreadlocks.
