Oh this is not a safe space suddenly—HAHA. Is that where the complaint in the previous ask came from? Because all I heard was general hesitation about cultural appropriation and thought it was the usual concerns from the international community.

I cannot stress how I am so not the person to talk about cultural appropriation and DEI stuff, so I can't go too deeply into this conversation but I do want to caution you that even when someone is "appreciating" another culture it could be cultural appropriation.

For example, people are understandably angry when a large fashion brand takes designs from indigenous communities and sells clothes with them without any of the profits going to the indigenous communities they took things from. Naturally, in order to sell these products, large fashion brands won't have them look mocking or disrespectful, but this situation still triggers a feeling of wrongness with us, wouldn't you say so?

So, like, it could be argued that Light and Night is profiting off of this theme. But I guess the question is whether there is a current community descended directly from Ancient Egyptians that would be harmed by people who take their culture and profit off of it? I don't know the answer to this. If there is some sort of representative community, they are very unlikely to be participating in the niche otome game community and so this "profit" would not be available to them anyway. Would it be okay if donations were made to this community because of how their culture was used? Would it be okay if, instead of donations, there were Egyptologists on the team and they consulted with historians and got the approval of historians? Can these historians represent Ancient Egyptians or the community that descended from Ancient Egyptians? (On that note, Light and Night mentioned on their roadmap that they were going to talk about their setting on 11/9 so we might be able to see their reason for choosing Ancient Egypt and who they consulted.)

Why are we so concerned specifically about this when no one bats an eye at people using the history of Great Britain and blaspheming Christianity, or is that okay because they were colonizers compared to those who were colonized?

Honestly, my whole thoughts on this (and apologies if I'm repeating myself) is that people are totally free to be against cultural appropriation and call it out, but then their standards should be applied equally across the board. No culture should be using another culture for any reason, and if there are exceptions (ex. punching up is allowed) then that opens a whole other can of worms to explore (ex. why is this exception allowed and not hypocritical).

I just wanted to come on here and agree with the anonymous user about Pan I think her opinion was really just ignorant I mean changing skin color, dreadlocks really?? I get the whole cultural appropriation but shouldn't that be called out when someone's actively mocking it not when someone's appreciating it? LN made beautiful art out of it. Since the release I've never admired Egypt more than now!
